International Schools in Tokyo

If you are moving to Tokyo with children already in the American system and want to pick up exactly where you left off, ASIJ is the obvious first call. The campus is vast, the programme is thorough, and the parent community is well established. The Chofu location is the main thing to think through - budget around 50 minutes on the school bus from central Tokyo.

TIS is worth serious consideration if genuine diversity matters to you - it actively limits any single nationality and has 70+ represented in a school of 360. The new Takanawa Gateway campus opening August 2026 is a meaningful upgrade. The one thing to confirm now: whether the DP track is fully in place for your child's timeline.

Ages 5-15 · American, Japanese Bilingual · Minato / Moto-Azabu · ~480 students

If your family is planning a multi-year or long-term stay in Japan and you want your children to genuinely learn Japanese - not just exposure - Nishimachi is the best option in central Tokyo for ages 5-15. Just be clear-eyed that the school ends at Grade 9, so you will need a high school plan.

Ages 3-18 · British, IB · Minato / Azabudai · ~1,400 students

BST is the natural choice for British families in Tokyo who want a British education and a strong expat community around them. The new Azabudai Hills primary campus is excellent. Just go in with eyes open on the IB transition - ask what the current sixth-form results look like and how the school is building its IB track record.

Ages 3-18 · Canadian, AP · Shinagawa / Osaki · ~600 students

CISJ is the right option if you want a Canadian curriculum school in Tokyo - it is the only one of its kind - and your child is in Grades 1-12 where the BC PEI programme is strongest. The split campuses in Shinagawa and Nakameguro work well enough, but check which site your child's year group is on before visiting.

For families with daughters, ISSH has the strongest AP results in Tokyo - a 4.27 average and 100% of scores at 3 or above in recent sittings. The admissions restrictions (English-speaking parent required; no Japanese-only passports below Grade 10) mean it's not for everyone, but the academic record stands on its own.

If top IB Diploma results are your primary filter, KIST belongs at the top of your list - a 42.0 average in 2025 is world-class. This is a focused academic school, not an all-rounder. Go in knowing that; if that trade-off works for your family, it is an outstanding choice.

Ages 5-18 · IB, American · Setagaya · ~1,000 students

If you are sending a son to school in Tokyo and want an established Catholic environment with a strong IB finish and a serious debate and sports culture, St. Mary's is the obvious shortlist candidate. Factor in a sizeable entrance fee - JPY 1,000,000 - on top of tuition when you're budgeting year one.

For families with daughters who thrive in an academically focused, values-led environment, Seisen is one of the strongest IB girls schools in Asia. A 97.7% Diploma pass rate and average score of 35 in 2025 are the numbers that matter. If you want a co-ed school or a school with broad co-curricular scale, look elsewhere.

Ages 2-18 · IB · Nerima / Hikarigaoka · ~790 students

Aoba is the right call if you want a full IB Continuum school where Japanese is genuinely embedded - not an add-on - and you're comfortable with campuses outside central Tokyo. At JPY 2.65M for secondary, it's one of the most affordable full-continuum IB options in the city.

SIS is a genuinely promising option for families in south Tokyo who want a full IB Continuum school without the price tag of BST or KIST. The DP was authorised in 2024 and the first graduating class sits in June 2026 - the school has no published Diploma results yet, so families placing children in the DP should weigh that carefully.

GIIS Tokyo is the right call if you are an Indian family in Tokyo looking for CBSE continuity, or if you want a credible international school at a fraction of the fees of the mainstream options. At JPY 1M-2M per year it is by far the most affordable, but it primarily serves the Indian community and that shapes the school culture significantly.
